Models of Communal Construction: How Communities Are Built — Text-based learning
Coming together over the short term for specific projects, or joining together to build longer term communities, can be marvelous as well as fraught. Jewish tradition has a lot to say about the best ways to define, establish and maintain strong communities. In this session, we will look at four models of community that come from our tradition and consider the ways in which each of these models creates costs and benefits for the folks who choose them: single-focus gathering points, “gated” communities, communities of difference and open tents. We will spend some time thinking through how these models can be helpful when trying to build community across political and religious differences.
